Dermal fillers* are clear gels, made from a substance which naturally occurs in the body. The main role of this substance is to attract and hold water, providing hydration to the skin. As we age, our natural levels of this substance decrease, contributing to a visible deterioration in skin quality. Dermal fillers can help volumise the skin and restore these levels. This improves skin quality and results in a rejuvenated and refreshed appearance.

Further changes that occur with aging include changes to the shape of the skull and volume loss in the fat compartments of the face. Dermal fillers are also administered in these circumstances to volumise the tissues, improve symmetry, create shape and contour and reverseg some of the visible signs of aging. Done well, filler treatments should always look natural and be difficult to detect.
Respectable Injectables values your safety and only uses temporary dermal fillers approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of Australia. These fillers are the popular brands made by the leading pharmaceutical companies. They are all designed to metabolise and disappear over time and can even be dissolved if necessary.
Dermal fillers are injected under the skin using either a needle or cannula and your Respectable Injectables practitioner is skilled at using both techniques. They will select the most appropriate treatment methods based on your goals. Bruising and swelling should always be anticipated regardless of which techniques are used.
This will differ for each person and be dependent on many factors. Your Respectable Injectables practitioner will explain the aging process during your consultation and help identify treatment areas that can be considered, to help you achieve a rejuvenated and refreshed appearance.
1 syringe of dermal filler is only equal to 1ml, or one fifth of a teaspoon. For this reason, multiple syringes of filler are often required to adequately treat some areas of the face, to restore lost volume and achieve a natural look.
Dermal fillers take up space under the skin and begin to expand the tissues immediately, therefore you will be able to see the effect as soon as the treatment is over. The final result, however, may take several weeks as the fillers slowly integrates into the tissues and swelling and bruising resolves.
Longevity will differ for each person and can depend on many factors including the brand of filler, its strength, the area of treatment, as well as the depth in the tissues and the volume injected. Other factors that can affect longevity include a person’s metabolism as well as lifestyle factors including sun exposure, exercise, medication use and smoking.
Following your treatment, your practitioner will recommend when to consider having further treatments, to maintain the effect.
Dermal filler is a substance that naturally occurs in the body and for this reason it is usually well tolerated, and side effects are rare and probably due to allergies to other ingredients such as anaesthetic.
Post treatment skin reactions such as skin redness, swelling, itching, bruising or slight pain and tenderness are common however, and are a normal part of the healing process. These reactions generally subside quickly and should not cause too much concern.
Serious complications to dermal filler treatments are very rare but can include infection, impaired circulation to the area treated (or surrounding tissue), stroke or blindness. While these things sound scary it must be stressed that the chances of them happening are incredibly low. Your Respectable Injectables practitioner will discuss all these risks with you, before any treatment is provided, as well as explain the things they will do, to significantly lessen the chance of serious complications happening.
Respectable Injectables practitioners are always available in the days following your treatment to discuss any concerns, if you believe you have side effects which are troublesome or persistent.
As a precaution, we are keeping any covid vaccine or covid booster at least 2 weeks apart from any filler treatment. The reason for this is that a small number of patients (internationally) have experienced a temporary inflammatory response in some of their fillers following a covid vaccine. Generally no intervention is necessary if this happens and it resolves on its own within a few days. This is not a concern for other vaccines or with antiwrinkle treatment. Please speak with your practitioner if you have other questions.
