PDO mono threads have been around for many years now but only recently available within Australia. The treatment is a safe and effective way to improve skin quality by thickening and tightening the skin. They differ from lifting threads because they are smooth and don’t have any barbs or cones on them. This means they are unable to reposition or lift skin, however they can still provide an improvement of fine lines and wrinkles by gradually stimulating natural collagen production.
PDO mono threads are made from a material called polydioxanone which is an absorbable polymer that is flexible and durable. It is the same substance used to make internal, dissolvable stitches for surgical procedures.
PDO threads induce the production of collagen, creating a subtle tightening effect for 6 to 12 months after the procedure. The threads become a support structure for the skin, allowing natural collagen production to take place. Over time the PDO mono threads are fully absorbed by the body.
PDO mono threads are wrapped around very fine needles. The needles are inserted into the treatment area and when removed the thread is left behind under the skin. The thread is absorbed over several months and replaced with a thread of new collagen.
A thread treatment generally only causes mild discomfort. Topical anaesthetic will be applied to the treatment area beforehand which will make the treatment very tolerable.
This will differ for each person and be dependent on skin quality as well as surface area. Small treatment areas like above the lip will not need as many threads as larger areas, such as neck or jawline. Your practitioner will assess you and decide on a therapeutic dose of threads for your treatment. The goal of every treatment is to maximise your collagen production so you can gain the best possible benefit.
A typical treatment will take up to 30 minutes, however your practitioner will likely bring you in earlier so that topical anaesthetic can be applied first.
Many patients notice an initial effect around 2 weeks when the immune response peaks and water is pulled into the skin to hydrolise the threads. After that time results are often seen from 6 weeks onwards and should gradually continue for up to 6 months as new collagen is produced. To maximise your collagen production, a repeat treatment is recommended within 3 to 6 months. The combined collagen boost should last a year or more.
Post treatment reactions such as skin redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness are common but should not cause concern. However, many patients like to be strategic about when they have their treatment, so they can have a few days to recover afterwards and let and bruising or swelling settle.
Respectable Injectables practitioners are always available in the days following your treatment to discuss any concerns, if you believe your side effects are troublesome or persistent.
After care is minimal and involves using simple analgesia for discomfort and an icepack for any bruising or swelling. Makeup and your usual skin care can be applied the following day if required.
