Anti-wrinkle injections* have been available for more than 25 years and in that time have been administered safely to tens of millions of people around the world. The injectable products used, are purified proteins which are derived from a bacterium and are completely harmless.
At Respectable Injectables, we use the 2 main brands of anti-wrinkle product, available in Australia and our highly skilled practitioners can explain the differences between these products in your consultation.
* Due to Australian law we are not allowed to use the brand name
or ingredients that make up or identify these products.
When injected into a muscle, these products block the chemical signal which travels from the nerve ending, to the muscle fibre, telling it to contract. Without this chemical signal the muscle is unable to contract, and the skin attached to it does not scrunch, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Appropriate dosing can vary significantly from one person to another and your Respectable Injectables practitioner will make a full assessment of your face to determine individual requirements, prior to any treatment. We respect the fact that each person may desire a slightly different result and we will attempt to tailor a result that suits you.
Following your treatment, it is likely to take 4 or 5 days before you will see noticeable changes. The muscle movement will then continue to decrease over the next few days and possibly take up to 2 weeks to be fully effective.
Results often last about 3 months with the ‘peak’ effect lasting up to 6 weeks. At about this time the chemical signal starts to get through again, and some soft movement begins to return. The effect continues to lessen over the remainder of the 3 months.
Treatments should be repeated every 3 months, however as you have further treatments, you may notice your results starting to last longer. Where appropriate, your Respectable Injectables practitioner will advise if you can consider reducing your dose or lengthening the time between appointments.
Most patients never experience any side effects from anti-wrinkle injections. The most common side effect (which is also quite uncommon), is a slight headache, and usually only occurs on the first couple of treatments. Side effects such as puffy or dry eyes, drooping eyelids or flu like symptoms, are very uncommon and something most patients will never have to worry about.
Minor skin reactions from the needle are more common and these can include pain or minor discomfort, tingling on the skin, itching, bruising, swelling or redness at the injection site. These reactions are all normal and resolve quickly.
Your Respectable Injectables practitioner will be able to explain any risks with your treatment, along with ways to reduce the chance of experiencing unwanted side effects, and this will be done prior to your treatment.
This can depend on many variables including health, age and skin condition. Wrinkles on a young person may be very light while those on an older person are likely to be much stronger. The anti-wrinkle treatment should reduce the muscle contraction and in doing so, improve the appearance of the lines. For a young person this may mean the lines totally disappear, however for an older person, the lines may still be visible but hopefully they won’t look as severe. With repeat treatments and prolonged periods of reduced movement, the body will produce collagen and elastin that will slowly repair the lines.
Many first-time patients are fearful of having a ‘frozen’ face following their treatment, but this is not a realistic concern. Following a treatment, you will still be able to laugh, smile and frown, but there will be less wrinkling and scrunching of the skin in the area treated. You will still be able to show expression but will simply have a more refreshed appearance.
